DECA’s Advisor Mentoring Network is a formal year-long program that connects new DECA advisors to experienced DECA advisors who serve as their mentors. The journey of serving as a chapter advisor can be made easier by joining our mentoring network. DECA advisors with three or less years of experience are paired with an amazing experienced chapter advisor who can help answer all their DECA related questions.

The benefits of the DECA Advisor Mentor Network include:

  • Providing new advisors with access to a network and support system to facilitate professional and career development within DECA
  • Providing an opportunity for new advisors to engage in meaningful DECA professional development activities
  • Linking new advisors with experienced advisors to facilitate local “knowledge sharing” and to answer association-specific questions
  • Continuity of support

The Advisor Mentoring Network Playbook serves as a guide for kicking off the mentorship relationship, setting expectations and outcomes, developing an individualized mentoring plan and facilitating monthly conversations.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW DO I JOIN THE MENTORING NETWORK?

DECA Inc. is supporting our chartered associations by providing a framework for the DECA Advisor Mentoring Network. Because the primary goal of the program is to provide new DECA advisors with information relevant to their chartered association, the pairings of a new DECA advisor and mentor must originate from the chartered association advisor. In some cases, the pairings may be one-on-one, while in other cases one or a few mentors provide coaching to all the new DECA advisors within the chartered association.

We encourage all DECA advisors with up to three years’ experience to ask their chartered association advisor for a mentor pairing to participate in the program. However, almost all support materials for the DECA Advisor Mentoring Network program are available on this page.

HOW CAN I SERVE AS A MENTOR?

If you are an experienced chapter advisor willing to help new advisors transition to the ins and outs of DECA more seamlessly, we encourage you to consider becoming a mentor for your association and help our organization grow stronger.  Please reach out to your chartered association advisor to notify him or her of your interest in serving as a mentor for a new DECA advisor within your chartered association.

WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT OF THE PROGRAM?

We request you commit to an entire school year to encourage long-term growth. The monthly time commitment will depend on the expectations and outcomes set by the new advisor and mentor in the kick off meeting.   We encourage monthly meetings, either virtually or in-person, of 30 to 60 minutes at least once each month. The DECA Advisor Mentoring Playbook provides content and discussion topics to serve as a springboard for each month’s meeting. All new DECA advisors and mentors will also receive an e-mail the first of each month with this information to serve as a reminder to meet that month.
Additional time may be spent on specific deliverables as part of the action plan developed, or at additional DECA activities, meetings or conferences as part of the regular school year. The goal of this program is to be beneficial and not simply another requirement, so we encourage you to be as productive, meaningful and efficient as possible.

ARE THERE REQUIRED MEETINGS?

We encourage both new DECA advisors and mentors to watch the short orientation video during their initial kick off meeting, and then set monthly meetings on your own schedules. DECA Inc. does not require any meetings for the entire mentoring network’s audience to attend. However, check with your chartered association as they may host association-wide new advisor workshops, virtual trainings or specific mentoring meetings with the expectation of your attendance.

CAN I RECEIVE DOCUMENTATION OF MY PARTICIPATION?

Absolutely! The Advisor Mentoring Network Playbook provides a discussion log on page 2 to track your interactions and hours. Please complete this each month, and at the end of the year you may turn it in to debbie@deca.org for a certificate that indicates your hours which you may then turn in for CEU credits as appropriate. This can be provided for both the new advisor and mentor.
