In this course students study the American business system as part of our total economic environment and become skillful in selecting and using goods and services to manage their personal and business affairs. Topics are banking, insurance, financial management, credit, savings and investments, consumer decisions, labor and management relations, and the use of computers in business and industry.

The following competitive events are examples of events that can be integrated into this course. Additional events may also be appropriate depending on the scope, content and structure of the course. These are suggestions for using competitive events in your classroom. They are not intended to restrict you or your students to certain competitive events. Any DECA member can enter any competitive event.

Competitive Events Description

Apparel & Accessories Marketing Series is a short business scenario. Individual students will be challenged to perform functions and tasks in businesses primarily engaged in the marketing of clothing and related articles for personal wear by assuming the role of customers, employees, supervisors and managers.

Automotive Services Marketing Series is a short business scenario. Individual students will be challenged to perform functions and tasks in businesses that service vehicles and/or provide parts for vehicles by assuming the role of customers, employees, supervisors and managers.

Business Services Marketing Series is a short business scenario. Individual students will be challenged to perform functions and tasks in providing services to businesses on a fee or contract basis or providing services directly to the consumer by assuming the role of customers, employees, supervisors and managers.

Food Marketing Series is a short business scenario. Individual students will be challenged to perform functions and tasks in businesses engaged in the sale of food products by assuming the role of customers, employees, supervisors and managers.

Quick Serve Restaurant Management Series is a short business scenario. Individual students will be challenged to perform functions and tasks in businesses engaged in providing food in or through quick service restaurant by assuming the role of customers, employees, supervisors and managers.

Retail Merchandising Series is a short business scenario. Individual students will be challenged to perform functions and tasks in retail businesses by assuming the role of customers, employees, supervisors and managers.

Sports and Entertainment Marketing Series is a short business scenario. Individual students will be challenged to perform functions and tasks in relating to sports or entertainment events by assuming the role of customers, employees, supervisors and managers.
