Students will interpret financial data to develop short– and long–term budgetary plans, produce accurate reports and make business decisions. Students will develop product knowledge related to financial and investment planning by examining characteristics to distinguish between stocks, bonds and commodities, and insurance and annuity products. Students will study differences between secured and unsecured credit and follow appropriate steps to develop an investment plan. Students will develop a financial plan to address client needs and use tax preparation procedures to determine tax liability.

The following competitive events are examples of events that can be integrated into this course. Additional events may also be appropriate depending on the scope, content and structure of the course. These are suggestions for using competitive events in your classroom. They are not intended to restrict you or your students to certain competitive events. Any DECA member can enter any competitive event.

Competitive Events Description

Accounting Application Series is a short business scenario. Individual students will be challenged to perform functions and tasks focusing on the application of financial data to business planning and analysis of data to make business decisions by assuming the role of customers, employees, supervisors and managers.

Financial Analysis Management Team Decision Making Event is a case study event in a role-play format. A team of two is given a case study involving analysis of financial records. The participants present their recommendations to the judge playing the role of supervisor, manager or owner.

Participants in the Stock Market Game use a web based simulation to develop and manage an investment portfolio. Participants compete to increase the value of their portfolio.

Retail Marketing Research Event asks teams of one to three students to actual marketing research in a retail business. The topic is identified by DECA each year. The students present their findings in a written report and satisfying the desire to make productive or enjoyable use of leisure time.

In the Fashion Merchandising Promotion Plan a team of students develop and present a seasonal sales promotion plan for apparel and accessory items.
