In this course students will compose written and electronic communications to convey
technical concepts and company information, develop and deliver formal and informal
presentations related to a broad range of business topics, apply active listening skills to
obtain and clarify information. Students will interpret and use tables, charts and figures to
support written and oral communication, and locate, organize and reference written information
from various sources to communicate with coworkers and clients/participants.
The following competitive events are examples of events that can be integrated into this course.
Additional events may also be appropriate depending on the scope, content and structure of the
course. These are suggestions for using competitive events in your classroom. They are not
intended to restrict you or your students to certain competitive events. Any DECA member can
enter any competitive event.

Competitive Events Description
The Public Relations Project is a chapter team event requiring a class or group of students to design and implement a public relations campaign on any topic or subject of interest to the students. The project requires the students to demonstrate skills in planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating a public relations campaign.
The Sunkist Challenge is a web based advertising design project conducted twice each year. Students develop viral advertisements that can be used on email, mobile, instant messaging and or social networking space/blogs.
The Entrepreneurship Promotion Plan is a chapter team event requiring a class or group of students to design and implement a campaign to educate chapter members and the general public or an organized group about the opportunities available for becoming an entrepreneur. The project requires the students to demonstrate skills in planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating a public relations campaign.
