DECA convenes second membership development project

2011-06-15

Nine state associations participated in DECA’s second membership development project held at DECA Inc.’s headquarters in Reston, Va., on June 6-8, 2011.

“Building membership is one key strategy to serving a growing population of students who are interested in various career areas,” said Ed Davis, executive director of DECA Inc. “This meeting was an opportunity to use our new messages and programs across the career areas of marketing, entrepreneurship, finance, hospitality and management to develop highly targeted membership campaigns.”

Teams of state advisors and chapter advisors from Florida, Idaho, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, South Carolina and West Virginia participated in a series of case studies, discussions and activities designed to develop a state-specific comprehensive membership campaign. State Advisors Brycen Woodley, California; Rhonda Samples, Georgia; and Jerry DiGiovanni, Pennsylvania shared best practices with the group via Skype.

Participants included:

  • Lynore Levenhagen, Florida
  • Tammy DeLeonardo, Florida
  • Kristi Enger, Idaho
  • Marci Holcomb, Idaho
  • Donna McFadden, Massachusetts
  • Frank Rosa, Massachusetts
  • Dave Wait, Michigan
  • Cathy Cunningham, Michigan
  • Liz Mosher, Michigan
  • Julia Pitlyk, Missouri
  • Stephanie Williams, Missouri
  • Christine Phipps, New Mexico
  • Richard Fulkner, New Mexico
  • Pam O'Brien, North Carolina
  • Nick Edwards, North Carolina
  • Heather Hill, South Carolina
  • Norma Brown, South Carolina
  • Betty Sias, West Virginia

Each state association developed two plans – one for building membership in current chapters and one for expanding its membership base through new chapters – with goals, action steps, accountability measures and incentives. At the conclusion of the working session, the teams shared their campaigns that they will execute in their state associations.

The campaigns are posted to the right to provide best practices and ideas to all chapters and state/provincial associations. The nine state associations will be engaged in a variety of on-going activities throughout the membership year.
