DECA thanks the states that contributed to The Movement

2012-04-06

The Movement, a fundraising effort for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), has concluded for the school year. The Movement was introduced by National Officer Team 66 in cooperation with Jay Koontz, a former Oklahoma DECA State Officer. The project is a two-year endeavor with the ultimate goal of raising one million dollars for MDA. The 2011-2012 school year served as the “pilot” year for the project. This year’s goal was for DECA chapters to collectively raise $100,000 more for MDA than they did last year. The strategy to accomplish this goal was to unite at least 25 chartered associations that would each convince a minimum of eight chapters to join The Movement. These chapters were charged with raising $500 more for MDA than they did last year, which would equate to an additional $100,000. Next year, the goal will be for DECA chapters to collectively raise $1,000,000 for MDA.

Twenty-two chartered associations joined The Movement and made MDA a focal point this year.

Participating chapters were asked to submit a contribution report to their National Regional Vice President. Although not every participant submitted a contribution report, the data that was submitted provides several encouraging signs. Participants of The Movement that submitted a contribution report raised a combined total of $101,569 for MDA. Additionally, these chapters raised a combined $55,827 more for MDA than they last year. Therefore, since the project’s goal was to encourage chapters to raise funds at a higher level, we can specifically attribute $55,827 of DECA’s fundraising total to The Movement. Furthermore, 62% of chapters that submitted a contribution report did not raise funds for MDA last year, which demonstrates The Movement encouraged more chapters to support MDA.

Due to the fact that not all participants have yet submitted a contribution report, the data in the foregoing paragraph is not comprehensive. However, the available data reveals two key accomplishments of The Movement: many participants significantly increased their fundraising numbers for MDA, and more chapters supported MDA. When the cumulative MDA fundraising numbers are released at ICDC, the overall impact of The Movement will be more clear as DECA will be able to compare last year’s total to this year’s total.

All participants of The Movement deserve to be thanked for their efforts. As DECA continues to focus its fundraising efforts, major strides will be taken to find a cure for Muscular Dystrophy. Together, DECA chapters throughout the world can make a difference that will benefit the lives of countless people.
