Collegiate DECA's July Chapter Spotlight

2010-08-19

This month, our spotlight is highlighting the summer activities of the Appleton Collegiate DECA chapter from Fox Valley Technical College. Led by their state officer, Alyssa Taylor, and chapter president, Katie Price, the FVTC chapter strives to stay involved year-round. This past weekend, members of the chapter participated in the Paperfest, an annual community celebration named after two large paper mills in the area that includes concerts, car shows, and sporting events like the 5k Sunset run/walk, all in an effort to raise money for local non-profit organizations. Last year, the Paperfest raised over $500,000.

Knowing that the chapter wanted to stay involved over the summer break, chapter leaders began to look for unique outlets for members to not only come together, but to help out their local community. When asked why the chapter chose to participate in the 5k Taylor was enthused to tell me how members of the chapter were glad they could see the funds go back into the “Fox Valley” and its local non-profit organizations.

Katie Price was equally enthused with the reaction to the events and stated that "the coolest thing was seeing all the people camped out in their front yard cheering and supporting all the runners and walkers as they passed by!" The Appleton chapter hopes to volunteer more extensively in next year’s Paperfest as a way to raise funds for the year. The chapter is staying involved by holding weekly officer meetings, monthly chapter meetings, and planning out their fall calendar that includes Collegiate DECA Week, Fall Leadership Conference, and other community service activities. Taylor is eager to participate in the upcoming Make-a-Wish walk, where the entire state association has a goal of raising $50,000 for Make-a-Wish.
