How To Earn Respect As A Leader
2013-02-06
It is easy to think that being in a leadership position inherently brings respect from your constituents. However, respect is not something leaders are entitled to, it is something they need to earn. Below are some tips on how to earn respect from others:
1. Be ConsistentPeople usually lack credibility because they say one thing and do another. Do not be a hypocrite. Follow up with the promises you make so others can trust you and you can build your credibility.
2. Be PunctualPeople do not like waiting. Being late or missing meetings shows a total disregard for the schedule and lives of others. Be on DECA time and you’ll never be late.
3. Own Up to Your MistakesAs much as we all want to be perfect, we have to accept that we are human and we make mistakes. Rather than making excuses for your mistakes, own up to them. People will respect you for your honesty and humility and you will learn better for next time.
4. Treat Others With RespectAlthough most people know this, common knowledge is not common practice. The easiest way to earn respect is by giving it to others.
