Planting the seeds of entrepreneurship

DECA has touched each of our lives in very different ways. One of the greatest ways DECA has helped me THRIVE is through my business, Pumpkins with Perspective.

My sophomore year I created a business plan for my existing business, and was humbled to receive second place at the International Career Development Conference in Louisville, Kentucky. However, the ultimate lesson I learned through this experience is that there is never a pinnacle for success. We need to create goals, strive to reach them, and once we attain them, set new ones. It is this constant progression that allows us to THRIVE.

Entrepreneurship is the key to capitalism. Without constantly challenging the current market, we will never seek our full potential. As DECA members, we understand how crucial this niche is in the economy. When we participate in a DECA competitive event, we are accentuating everything in its final gloss and glamour. Sometimes, the most important thing we can share with our judge or customer is where the product came from and the foundational steps it took to become what it is now.

One of my most popular products is my one-of-a-kind colored pumpkin. I cross breed the seeds to transform the traditional orange pumpkin into an array of greens, pinks and blues. With these pumpkins, I am able to create beautiful displays for my customers!

My final product starts from one seed. For Pumpkins with Perspective, this is where it all begins. This time of year is pivotal for my business, because it is pumpkin planting season. It is amazing how one seed can grow and prosper into endless potential and opportunity. I challenge each of you to think about what is important to you, and how it is linked to entrepreneurship. As DECA members, we have a great asset on our side, and that is the endless possibility to THRIVE! I challenge you to find yours and plant new seeds of opportunity!
