Taking a Cue from our 33rd US President

2011-09-30

As many of you know, I live in the Show-Me State: Missouri. One of Missouri’s claims to fame is that the 33rd President of the United States, Harry Truman, lived in the Show-Me State for most of his life. In fact, Truman lived in my hometown, Clinton, during his early childhood. Like many great Presidents, Truman made many memorable and noteworthy statements. My favorite quote from Truman is this: “Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers.” As DECA members, we are all leaders. Therefore, the message of this quote directly applies to us.

Why is reading such an important activity for leaders? In my opinion, there are two main reasons. The first reason is that reading opens our minds to different viewpoints and ideas. Every book I have ever read has introduced me to new ways of thinking and new concepts. Even if you don’t agree with the message of a book, what you have read has more than likely introduced you to new concepts. I am adamant that reading books “turns on the lights” to topics that were previously in the shadows.

The second reason that reading is important to leaders is that it reinforces certain thoughts and beliefs. As humans, we all have a set of principles and values that we follow. Reading books can help us to better understand our beliefs. Without the knowledge found in books, we would have difficulty supporting our viewpoints. Reading books is our avenue to better understanding the concepts in life that we hold true.

I encourage you to set aside some time each day to read. Find a few books that interest you and create time in your busy schedule to reach a chapter each evening. After all, “leaders are readers.”

DECA Wishes,

Micah Melling
