I’ve said this multiple times: Twitter may be the greatest thing ever invented. OK, that might be a bit of a stretch, but it is pretty amazing. I find myself getting on my BlackBerry many times a day to check Twitter, and I don’t view that as a bad habit. By the end of this blog, you’ll understand why.
I started heavily using Twitter last spring. Every player on my high school baseball team created a Twitter account, and we would Tweet after our games. We actually became a bit obsessed…we would have conversations on Twitter during our bus rides, although we could have easily carried a verbal conversation. There was also one time (during a blowout, of course) when several of us Tweeted during a game, which probably wasn’t the best idea, but we never got caught. The Twitter phase lasted for most of the season, and we even started trending our own words (explaining this would require another blog). This may sound odd, but the whole Twitter craze was a highlight of the season and will be one of the memories I’ll always carry with me.
In addition to being quite fun, Twitter has an academic side. In fact, I maintain that using Twitter has educated me on a number of topics. I use Twitter to stay up to date on world news, politics, sports, the stock market, and many other important topics. Thousands of reputable and reliable accounts exist, and they often post links to extremely informative and educational articles and blogs. Certainly, Twitter is the place to find the latest news on any topic. If you can’t watch the evening news or read the latest newspaper, Twitter can easily provide you with great coverage of any breaking story. And did you know the DECA has a Twitter account? By following @DECAInc on Twitter, you’ll ensure yourself of always knowing the latest news in DECA.
If you don’t have a Twitter account or don’t use your account, I strongly encourage you change that. Academically, Twitter has undeniable benefits. This social-networking site can make you a more-informed person on nearly any topic. Also, be sure to follow me (@MJMelling), and I promise I’ll follow you back!
And who knows, maybe a sports team you’re on will do some crazy things with Twitter...
